Problem Description

Blocking peer to peer (P2P) applications
You want to know how to block P2P applications

Resolution

In SGOS 4 and later, the ProxySG recognizes peer to peer (P2P) activity relating to P2P file sharing applications. By constructing policy, you can control, block, and log P2P activity and limit the bandwidth consumed by P2P traffic. This version of SGOS supports the following P2P services:

  • FastTrack (Kazaa)
  • EDonkey
  • BitTorrent
  • Gnutella

For help configuring the ProxySG to block these P2P applications, please refer to Configuration and Management Guide (CMG) for the version of SGOS that you are running.  The CMGs are located at https://bto.bluecoat.com/documentation/pubs/ProxySG .

For SGOS 6.x, please see The Visual Policy Manager; Chapter 4: Advanced Policy Tasks; Section F: Managing Peer-to-Peer Services in the CMG.

For SGOS 5.x, please see Volume 6: The Visual Policy Manager; Chapter 4: Advanced Policy Tasks; Section F: Managing Peer-to-Peer Services in the CMG.

For SGOS 4.x, please see Chapter 15: Advanced Policy; Section E: Managing Peer-to-Peer Services in the CMG.

For help blocking other P2P applications, please refer to the Controlling P2P in the Enterprise Tech Brief.
