Problem Description

How do I setup CuteFTP Home and Professional to work through the ProxySG?
The ProxySG uses authentication.  How do I get CuteFTP to work with proxy authentication?

Resolution

This document assumes that you are using Raptor login syntax for your ProxySG.  For details on Raptor syntax, please see KB2898.  Please note that the menu options described below are from CuteFTP Home and Professional versions 8.3 (8.3.3.0054) and may change with newer or older versions of these FTP clients.  Your results may vary depending on version.  NOTE:  CuteFTP Lite was tested, but the product does not have a proxy setting.  Therefore, use the Home or Professional version to accommodate the use of a proxy.

TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE:  Once the proxy settings are all configured on the client, if CuteFTP works once and then fails several times and then works once and then fails, please see KB3341 for a way to work around the issue.

This document will be divided into three sections.  The first section covers proxy configuration for CuteFTP Home.  The second section covers proxy configuration for CuteFTP Professional.  The third section contains screen shots from the actual application.

CuteFTP Home edition proxy settings:

  1. Go to Tools > Global Options > Connection | Proxy Server.  (See screenshot #1 below.)
  2. Put a check next to "Use the highlighted proxy connection when connecting"
  3. Click on the "Add" button.
    1. Host name:  IP address or DNS name of the ProxySG
    2. Port:  21
    3. User:  ProxySG user name for the authentication realm used on the ProxySG.
    4. Password:  The password for the user entered above.
    5. Click on the Advanced button (See screenshot #2 below.)
      1. Select USER/PASS/ACCT as the Authentication Type.
      2. Click OK twice
  4. Test

CuteFTP Professional edition proxy settings:

  1. Go to Tools > Global Options > Connection | Proxy Server   (See screenshot #1 below.)
  2. Put a check next to "Use the highlighted proxy connection when connecting"
  3. Click on the "Add" button.
    1. Host name:  IP address or DNS name of the ProxySG
    2. Port:  21
    3. User:  ProxySG user name for the authentication real used on the ProxySG.
    4. Password:  The password for the user entered above.
    5. Proxy Type:  FTP     NOTE:  CuteFTP Professional does not make a CONNECT command to the proxy when configured as an HTTP proxy, so it does not work correctly when configured for HTTP.  Therefore, please use FTP as the proxy type and not HTTP.
    6. Click on the Advanced button  (See screenshot #2 below.)
      1. Select USER/PASS/ACCT as the Authentication Type.
      2. Click OK twice.
  4. Test

CuteFTP screen shots:  These screen shots were taken using CuteFTP Home edition and do not contain the Proxy Type described under the professional version of the FTP client.
