How do you install the Content Sync Module for Director?
What are the pre-requisites for installing the Content Sync Module ( CSM) for DIrector?
What is the Content Sync Module used for in Director deployments?
Can you pre-populate content on you SG appliances?
What type of content can be pre-populated using the CSM feature of Director?
Director is part of the Application Delivery Network, an infrastructure that provides complete application visibility, acceleration and security. Director supports the ADN by providing centralized policy, configuration and device management of Blue Coat ProxySG appliances across any distributed enterprise. From a single, easy-to-use Web interface, administrators can deploy hundreds of appliances, monitor and enforce security and acceleration policies. Content Delivery Network Architecture provides the ability to distribute content across the enterprise network using the Job Scheduler, eliminating the need to backhaul traffic and conserving valuable network resources. Content can be distributed, prioritized and scheduled according to business needs. An optional XML API is provided for quick access to content distribution controls.
The Content Sync Module of Director (CSM) can then be invoked and configured to create a list of HTTP or CIFS objects and folders for pre-population. After the intial scan, CSM can be used to rescan for updates to the content. Once the content list is created, it can be uploaded, (either by schedule or manually), to the Director. Director then pushes the list to each ProxySG within the Content Distribution list. Installation requires a Windows or LINUX workstation on which to install the Content Sync Module (CSM) component. Managing the Director appliance requires a Java applet, downloadable from the Director appliance, upon login. The CSM operates by crawling a CIFS, or HTTP server and tracks the time that the content was last modified, pushing the content to the ProxySG appliances accordingly.
Note: The Content Sync Module does not ship with Director, but is available as a separately downloable module. This article assumes you have a working DIrector appliance, and are able to log into it using the Director Management Console (DMC) Java application.
How the Content Sync Module (CSM) works:
The objective of the CSM is crawl selected web servers or file systems, tracking the time that the content was last modified, and then changing the content in the ProxySGs accordingly. Each time it runs, it creates a new list of objects and compares it to the previous list. Once compared, CSM creates a list of changed content, then issues content commands to Director, such as distribute new content or delete stale content.
Features of the Content Sync Module:
NOTE: The recomended Host operating system for the Content Sync Module is Windows Xp with service pack 3. There are known issues with installing this to Windows 7, or 64 bit Windows 2003 servers.
Installing the Content Sync Module (CSM) on Windows:
Note: While the CSM can be installed LINUX, we are only covering the Windows Install here. The LINUX install is covered in the CMG labelled - Director_5.5.x_Content_Sync_Module_Guide. Installing it on LINUX requires advanced LINUX skills, such s compiling the source code into the environment.
To install it on your Windows workstation, follow these steps.
You should now be ready to create a Job in the CSM module.
